Sustainability Committee News

Hi Everyone! This will be my last Lunations article as I am moving on from Stromlo at the end of this month. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been on the committee over the last few years for helping to make us so successful! We also welcome three new members - Ingrid McCarthy, James Beattie, and Gillian Altham - and say goodbye and thank you to Marcus Dirnberger, Steph Monty, and Nic Killerby-Smith. The various sustainability schemes currently running at MSO should continue broadly as they are, though there may be some changes once I'm gone (in particular, might have to stop taking blister packs!) so be sure to bring any hard-to-recycle items in for the expanded recycling before April 22nd!
The food waste bins in kitchens continue to be well utilised, and we'll hit a nice round milestone of 350kg diverted from landfill in total before I go. This (roughly) corresponds to avoiding the production of over 2000kg of CO2e, just by keeping kitchen scraps out of landfill! Of course, this doesn't include the food and organic waste people have brought from home for on-site composting, so we're actually doing even better!
The community garden (located behind House 18, in between AITC and Faulkner Court) will be completed in the next week or two, and I'd encourage everyone to go have a look when you need to take a few minutes away from your screens. Moving forward, Henry Zovaro has kindly agreed to be the main point of contact for the community garden, so please contact him in the first instance with any questions. I'm very excited to see how it all looks next summer!
I hope people are enjoying the Sustainability Spotlight series; if you have ideas or suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered, or any constructive feedback, please let me know.
It's been great to see how enthusiastically people have taken to the various schemes set up over the last two or so years, and hopefully this has also encouraged some small changes at home as well. Keep it up!
