School Director's Update
Published in the RSAA Lunations
Vol1 Issue53 1–31 July 2024
Congratulations this month to the three RSAA winners of ASA prizes who presented their work at the ASA. Matthew Colless received Ellery lecturership in recognition of his leadership of pioneering large redshift and peculiar velocity surveys of galaxies to understand their evolution and the large-scale structures they form, and to measure cosmological parameters. Christoph Federrath received the Anne Green Prize for outstanding research by a mid-career researcher in recognition of his work on star formation: theory and computation. The Charlene Heisler Prize for the most outstanding PhD thesis in astronomy was awarded to Shyam Menon (ANU, now at Rutgers University, USA) for his thesis 'The interplay of star formation and radiation feedback in the interstellar medium.'
A reminder that all Stromloites are welcome, and encouraged, to attend the Mount Stromlo 100th Anniversary Symposium. The website and registration page are live and we already have 85 registrations for attendance. Please mark the date of 18 September to join us for the Symposium at the Shine Dome, followed by a Gala Dinner at the Hyatt Canberra, which happens to be also celebrating its 100th Anniversary. Registrations are open until the 1 August.
A reminder also that this year’s Academic Promotions round is open and applications are due by 31 July. The ‘Academic Promotion’ page on the Science Intranet gives details on how promotions to the different Academic levels are handled within the College of Science.
We are adding a new section to our Lunations newsletters. Each month we will provide a listing of all RSAA publications for the previous month.
Please read on to learn about activities in what has been another busy month right across RSAA.
