We begin the year with congratulations to Professor Anna Moore who has been awarded the Royal Astronomical Society Jackson Gwilt Medal! The citation highlights her groundbreaking leadership in inventing and delivering novel astronomical instruments for international telescopes, her work at the forefront of Australia’s space program, her broad service to the community, and her dedication to promoting and mentoring women in science. At the conclusion of last years School review I joined the panel for their initial report back to the Dean, DVCRI and Provost. In addition to a strong affirmation of the quality and direction of the School, a number of headline recommendations will assist us in improving our scientific culture and impact, as well as in developing our new strategy in 2025.
The panel has now provided the final report of their findings. I am awaiting the DVCRI's endorsement following his return from leave after which I will be able to make the report available to the School. The next step will be for the School to draft a response & action plan to address recommendations.
As circulated by Associate Director IDEA, Luca Casagrande, a draft of the RSAA application for the ASA Pleaides award prepared by the IDEA committee is available for comment. Please send any comments or input by 5 Feb.
This month will see the release of the Decadal Plan exposure Draft. The plan will be presented at RSAA following the BBQ on 14 Feb as part of a National roadshow. Details to follow.
Late last year it was announced that Professor Céline d’Orgeville will be leaving the University to take up a new opportunity as Program Director within the ATNF. This is a great loss for RSAA, but a wonderful opportunity for Celine to take on a new challenge in a time of excitement for radio astronomy in Australia. Roger Haynes is currently acting Director, and I have commenced an expression of interest process for the appointment of new leadership for the AITC. I will update the School as soon as an appointment is made.
Finally, next week we will welcome Dr Melanie Kaasinen to the Faculty! Please introduce yourself and say hello!
