IDEA Committee Update

We are delighted to share that RSAA has been awarded the Gold Pleiades Award by the Astronomical Society of Australia. This recognition reflects the sustained efforts of our community in fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributes to making RSAA a supportive, respectful, and inspiring place to work and study. While this is a wonderful achievement, let’s remember: the real reward is the positive, thriving culture that we build together.
Please note that while this news may be shared internally within the university, it should not be posted on social media until after the ASA AGM.
Looking ahead, IDEA and the School are continuing to work on actions identified in the recent School review, as well as those recommended in the Nixon Review, to support and enhance the culture of our School. Many IDEA-related issues stem from communication gaps, and we encourage everyone to approach IDEA not just as a committee but as a way of working. If you are unsure where to turn for advice or support, the Resources section of the RSAA IDEA webpage has guidance charts for disclosures, reporting, contacts and support pathways.
We are also pleased to share a new Postdoc Induction Guide, written by postdocs for postdocs, now available under the Contact section of the RSAA page. If you are welcoming a new postdoc to RSAA, please be sure to pass this along, while we work toward systematically sharing this guide with all newcomers.
Lastly, while we coordinate additional in-person training with the Respectful Relationships Unit, we encourage everyone to complete the Rights, Relationships and Respect in Research module, available here. This course, currently under review for mandatory participation as part of the Nixon recommendations, offers valuable insights for maintaining healthy and respectful relationships in research and learning environments.
