October 2016 was the last time we saw water spill over the Timor dam. In January this year, the dam was sitting at the lowest level ever recorded, a miserly 14%.
At this level, no water could be pumped or gravity fed to the Coonabarabran water treatment plants. At the end of January, it started to rain, and as of late March the dam finally reached capacity and is now overflowing.
This is an amazing turn around in just two months. The 7 bores that were installed so that Coonabarabran wouldn't run out of water have now been turned off and we are getting water from the dam once again.
At one stage in 2018/2019, Coona was on Level 6 water restrictions, the highest in NSW. After the bores were introduced this went from 5 to 4. We are now on level 1 - and gardens in the town are once again coming to life!
Let’s hope for some more rain in coming months for the farmers.
