Do you know your Thesis Oversight Committee? (TOC)
The TOC oversee the progress of each RSAA thesis, including thesis proposals, annual presentations and final presentations
One priority of the RSAA during this confinement period is the well being of its students. We all recognize the impact it has been having on the progress of Theses and on the general professional growth of our future researchers. While we have very little control over the temporary closing of facilities, we want to make sure that all HDR students can rely on the advice and support of the Thesis Oversight Committee (TOC). Its members: Ken Freeman, Naomi McClure-Griffiths, Phil Taylor, Tony Travouillon (chair) and Emily Wisnioski are available as an additional support structure.
We encourage all of our students who face hardships to contact their preferred committee members, either for issues that cannot be resolved by their research panel or simply for issues that they feel would be better addressed by an independent set of academic advisors.
Soon, we will be circulating the annual review forms, one of the main tools used to inform us of students progress. Needless to say, this year's review will be of particular importance for us to react appropriately to the disruption caused by the fallout of the virus and help all our students continue toward the completion of their degree.
Another duty of the committee is to organize every winter a dedicated two-day seminar of students presentation that include new PhD proposals and progress of on-going research. This year is no different and while we expect our 2020 seminar to happen via zoom, we aim for the same high-standard that our students have delivered in the past. We are all looking forward to this seminar also as a way for us to get together and maintain our usual sense of community.
