Outreach Update

National Science Week is next month (15-23 August) and there are BIG things planned. We are working with the ACT Coordinating Committee to have a satellite fly over Canberra and surrounds three times and take a giant ‘Satellite Selfie’.

All 450,000+ Canberrans will be invited to ‘attend’ from their school, home or workplace and position themselves outside for a giant photograph taken from space, so please spread the word to your friends, family, schools, and neighbours!

The three flyovers will happen between 10am-11am (exact times TBD) on Monday the 17th, Wednesday the 19th, and Friday the 21st of August.

More info can be found on the website as well as the Facebook event.

At Stromlo we will do a big sign with cardboard and foil and make a spiral galaxy out of people. If you have any cardboard boxes you could donate, would like to be part of the Selfie, or if you’d like to help cut up some cardboard (we’re going to need a lot!), please let me know!

In other news, we have been doing lots of online outreach this year, including Facebook Live talks for students, teachers, families, and adults. You can find recordings of our past talks on the RSAA website.

At our July public night, Adam Rains talked about why Jupiter should be your favourite planet and Noelia Martinez discussed her work with Laser Guide Stars. Our next (online) public night will be during National Science Week on 21 August.

We are also continuing our Sunday Space with the Canberra Times:

On July 5th, Eloise Birchall explained how to cook up a planet.

On July 12th, Staci Pearlman explored the history and ways astronomy uses art to help people make a connection with space.

On July 19th, Markus Dirnberger talked about dwarf galaxies.

On July 26th, Nic Killerby-Smith explained the interesting world of merging galaxies.

If you’d like to be involved in any outreach, such as giving a talk on Facebook Live or writing an article for Sunday Space, please email outreach@mso.anu.edu.au
