Outreach Update

Published in the RSAA Lunations
Vol1 Issue10 1–30 November 2020

On October 7th and 8th, we successfully did our first in-person outreach since March for World Space Week: Space School. Around 50 kids and parents visited us over the two days to build and launch rockets, drive a car on the Moon, learn about earthquakes and marsquakes, build a spectroscope, and find out how gravity works – and get their intergalactic passport stamped along the way. Our CPAS intern, Rosie, did a fantastic job of organising the program even under some trying COVID-19 conditions. We received great feedback from attendees and I’m personally super happy about how it all went!

In case you missed any, all of the online public talks we have done this year can be found on the RSAA website. Many are suitable for children and classrooms, so feel free to share.

We are also continuing our Sunday Space with the Canberra Times:

4 October - Former CPAS intern Staci Pearlman provided a tour of some of the biggest telescopes in Australia and future ones like the GMT

11 October - Noelia Martinez Rey showed how the current work up here on AO builds off knowledge from Aboriginal Astronomy

25 October - Stephanie Monty talked about the origin of elements and how they are made in space

1 November - Tony Travouillon talked about our favorite large-scale facility the VRO and what it will do

If you’d like to be involved in any outreach, such as giving a talk on Facebook Live or writing an article for Sunday Space, please email outreach@mso.anu.edu.au
