The Three Minute Thesis is an international competition for higher degree research students to showcase their research. Students have to talk about what their research is and why it is important in plain language for three minutes, with only a single PowerPoint slide. The winner of the ANU 3MT final will go on to compete in the Asia Pacific final, held at the University of Queensland on 30th of September. » read more

The outreach team recently completed a session for the “Gifted and Talented” forum at Kingsford Smith School in Holt. The activities were based on lenses, diffraction gratings and light emitting diodes. Felicity and Ruvi were part of the team and enjoyed a challenging encounter with the group of very excited children! | |

Applied Maths (AM) Ms Martina Landsmann will be on annual leave 23 May - 26 June 2016.
Centre for Plasmas and Fluids (CPF) Professor Michael Shats will be on annual leave 30 May - 24 June 2016. A/Prof Matthew Hole will acting HOD during this period.
Prof Christine Charles will be away 17 May - 2 July 2016 giving plenary lectures and invited talks at APCPST 2016 in Shanghai, SFP 2016 in Nancy and ICPP in Taiwan and working with collaborators at University College London and French Universities.
Laser Physics Centre (LPC) Dr Stephen Gibson and Ben Laws (PhD student) will be away 13-28 June attending the International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, Champaign-Urbana IL, USA, June 20-24, with pre-conference collaborative research visits to Yale, MIT, Wellesley College, and post-conference, UC Berkeley.
Plasma Research Laboratory (PRL) Prof John Howard will be away 2-28 June 2016. A/Prof James Sullivan will be acting HoD 6-28 June. |

Robert and Helen Crompton Award 2016
Nominations are being sought for the Robert and Helen Crompton Award 2016. This Award provides funding of up to $15,000 to assist postgraduate research students enrolled at the Research School of Physics and Engineering to undertake part of their research program overseas or make a collaborative visit to an overseas institution, for three to six months.
Applications will open 9 May 2016 and close 5pm 9 June 2016. » read more

Labour to appoint a shadow minister for neurodiversity

Monique Craine, a blogger with autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia, suggested the post and was surprised to be taken seriously.
The Shadow chancellor, John McDonnell said: “We want to represent the whole of society fairly. At the moment we are focusing on LGBT, we’re focusing on women, we’re focusing on race, etc. But what about neurological diversity as well? And I think that’s come on to the agenda.” » read more
