Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
In the very early hours of this morning, Friday 2 June, LIGO announced its third gravitational wave detection. The infographic above was provided by Professor Susan Scott and shows the two previous detections. Please keep the great pics coming.
Please keep the positive feedback coming in around supporting our new administration teams. They deserve our support in transition and I greatly appreciate your comments
Wishing you a relaxing weekend,
Tim |

ANU/UNSW(Kensington)/UniSydney 2U cubesat |
|
On the 26th of May 2017 the ANU/UNSW(Kensington)/UniSydney 2U cubesat was deployed into orbit from the International Space Station while it was passing over London. AO03 is 10cm x 10cm x 20cm, weighs 2kG and contains experiments on radiation counting, GPS and spectral imaging. The RSPE group SP3 provided funding for most of the satellite and installed a tracking ground station on top the Weigold Building. The photo shows a bunch of 3 cubesats on the mid left about 3 seconds after deployment. | |

Director's Colloqium
The first Director’s Colloquium of the year was delivered by Dr. Evan Franklin. He spoke about the requirements for a stable power grid as we transition away from synchronous generators to non-synchronous wind and solar energy sources. He explained how this is a complex issue that will require coordination of technology, engineering and policy if we want to keep the lights on. It was great to see a mix of people from RSPE, CECS and local government attending. In a win for twitter, there were also a couple of people from the Clean Energy Council in Melbourne, who happened to be in town for the day. |
