Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Many thanks to all those involved in the working groups for the new building this week. Many of the technical details are being well tested and debated. I appreciate the due diligence being undertaken. As one of most technical buildings on campus I’m glad to see such care taken over the details.
At a special School afternoon tea on Monday we’ll be thanking our retiring Dean, Professor Andrew Roberts, for his valued support of RSPE and the College over these past 5 years. Please come along and join me in wishing Andrew every success in his next venture.
The VC invites us to celebrate the 71st anniversary of the ANU on Wednesday 2nd August, (http://www.anu.edu.au/events/anu-foundation-day). He is using this opportunity to announce several exciting new initiatives for the ANU, and I have a sneaking suspicion that there’ll be something in his speech for the physics community. I encourage you to join in Foundation Day (not to be confused with our Founder’s Day - October 13th) on Fellows Oval. The day will also feature a scavenger hunt, with some very fine prizes. See you there.
Stay warm this weekend,
Tim |

From the RSPE Equity and Access Committee
Gender stereotypes about intellectual ability emerge early and influence children’s interests
Common stereotypes associate high-level intellectual ability (brilliance, genius, etc.) with men more than women. These stereotypes discourage women’s pursuit of many prestigious careers; that is, women are underrepresented in fields whose members cherish brilliance (such as physics and philosophy). » read more
