Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Next week is the last week of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. After the 18th August CPAS, RSES, RSAA, MSI, RSC and RSPE will join with RSB and Fenner under the College of Science. Kiaran Kirk will then become our Dean. I’ve invited him to our next School Forum, to be followed by a tour of the School.
Market Day next week. My thanks go to the organisers and contributors to Physics Market, this year run in the new Pop Up Village over near AD Hope Building. Even if you’re not stationed at displays and posters please come over and add to the vibe. Given the prime location it’s a great chance to wave the flag on Tuesday.
I’d like to express my sincere thanks to Martina Landsmann, Petra Rickman and Andrea Butler for keeping the Director’s Office on track over the past few months. On Monday we will welcome Sue Wigley to the School. Please join us for cake around 1015, so we can show Sue our famous Physics hospitality.

DIVERSITY IN SCIENCE: Committees, candidates, and gender
Quotas to increase female representation on academic evaluation committees may unexpectedly hamper efforts to narrow gender gaps in the professoriate. Higher proportions of women on committees do not increase the number of female candidates promoted, nor do they lead to better identification of candidates who ultimately prove to be more productive. » read more

Mentoring and Guidance in Careers (MAGIC)
The first Mentoring and Guidance in Careers (MAGIC) workshop will be held from 13-17 November in Canberra. Applications are invited from women and diverse gender researchers with a PhD in mathematical or physical sciences, who are within 7 years after the award of their PhD. Up to 35 successful applicants will receive financial support for airfare and accommodation costs to attend the workshop. Applications are due 13 August.

Oral Presentations and Submission of Thesis
A reminder from the HDR Examinations Office that students must complete their Oral Presentation before submitting their thesis. HDR Examinations Office are unable to process a submission until after the Oral Presentation (as it is a required milestone).
Please ensure students are aware of the requirement of this milestone, as any delays could result in students being charged additional fees for extensions of program, SSAF, etc.

FlexeGRAPH has been selected to be part of the accelerator program Startup Autobahn based in Stuttgart. Startup Autobahn is Europe’s leading accelerator program, backed by Plug and Play, with a highly competitive process involving more than 300 applications. FlexeGRAPH will be undertaking pilot studies of their breakthrough liquid cooling technology for electric vehicle batteries and servers together with Daimler-Benz and BASF.

Physics Tutors wanted
A visiting American Professor is bringing his 17 year old son for a 3 month sabbatical in September. He would like to pay a private tutor to coach his son in introductory physics twice a week for about 1.5 hours per session. High school introductory physics in New York includes topics such as Describing Motion, Kinematics in Two Dimensions, Motion and Force, Circular Motion and Work and Energy. The text book he is using is Physics by Douglas Giancoli, 5th Ed.

RSPE will be hosting an RSPCA cupcake day to raise funds for the RSPCA of Canberra.
10am Monday 21st August in the Oliphant tearoom.
Our Team - RSPEct - is hoping to increase our donation from last year to $800.
If you are able to donate your time to bring some cupcakes please contact EA.RSPE@anu.edu.au, otherwise please come along on the day with plenty of cash to buy up big on cupcakes for yourself, family and friends. |

Professional staff are encouraged to continue their growth and development through attendance at a range of career development initiatives. Financial support is available through the Professional Staff Scholarship Scheme (PSSS) and the Professional Staff Development Endowment Fund (PSDEF).

The AINSE WISE School
AINSE has funding to invite a female student from each of its 35 Australian University members to attend a school at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), Lucas Heights.
The School will target 1st year University students. The students will have the opportunity to experience first-hand some of the research undertaken within the large infrastructure at ANSTO.
Any female student that will have completed a full time equivalent of first year subjects by the end of December 2017 is eligible to apply.
The student should have an interest in nuclear science and engineering.
