Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Please join me in making welcome A/Prof. Leanne Armand to RSES. Leanne is the new ANZIC-IODP Program Scientist, taking over from Neville Exon who has led the Australian and New Zealand marine geoscience communities and served the ANU capably in this role over the last 9 years. Leanne will be bringing her research group and active ARC and AAD grants to RSES, as well as expertise in micropalaeontology and Southern Ocean science.

I hope you are liking in the new weekly newsletter (as much as Marilee is enjoying putting it together!) and finding value in the information being provided. Any suggestions to further improve or add items to the newsletter are most welcome.

Finally, Jimin Yu and I will be joining and ANU science delegation visiting Universities in China over the next 10 days. During this time Paul Tregoning will be Acting Director

Steve Eggins

Research Adventures:

Last week PhD student Yang Wu and Stewart Fallon joined a group from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (Neal Cantin, Eric Matson, Ben Fusco, Niall Jeeves) to collect coral cores from around the Gladstone Harbour area and surrounds. The project is to reconstruct historical impacts on water quality during port construction, expansion and dredging. We will analyse the corals for trace elements (Pb, Zn, Al, ect…). The corals collected have lived for over 200 years in some areas. This will be a large component of Yang Wu’s PhD thesis.

New Colombo Plan

Fifteen ANU undergraduates are currently in Japan taking part the field-intensive course "Understanding Geological Hazards". This is a joint venture between RSES and the University of Tokyo funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the New Colombo Plan. The course will introduce students to the physical processes that underpin geological hazards and importantly their impact on the peoples and economies of the Indo-Pacific region. Follow #GeoHazardsNCP to keep up to date with the students' activities.

Fieldwork Activities:

The 2017 RSES Field Camp is in full sway, in the highly deformed and metmorphosed eclogite-blueschist terranes on the island of Sifnos, in the Cycladic archipelago,Aegean Sea, Greece.  The students are from the RSES 2017 MPhil and Masters cohort. They are being trained in the rudiments of geological form surface mapping, working at a scale of 1:5000 in areas of near perfect outcrop. This provides valuable "core skills" training . They will be on the rocks for 20 days, returning at the end of September.
