Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Over the past two weeks Dr Jimin Yu and I have accompanied a very successful College of Science delegation visit to China to develop research collaborations and student articulations. It is clear the School has much to gain from closer engagement with leading Chinese universities with whom existing links and our reputation are valuable assets.
Closer to home, the highlight of the past week was as described by Rhodri Davies “a humiliating 4-2 defeat of students by the victorious RSES staff football team”. Despite losing star midfielder Malcolm Sambridge early in the match, RSES staff overcame the superior skills, speed and frankly the much more credible appearance of the student team. Match official Eric Ward played an influential but ultimately not decisive role in the outcome, and match manager Geoff Pearson provided vital pre-, in- and post-match support.

ANU scientists produce best estimate of Earth's composition
Scientists at The Australian National University (ANU) have produced the best estimate of Earth’s elemental composition which will help them understand how the Earth formed 4.6 billion years ago.
“The four most abundant elements – iron, oxygen, silicon and magnesium – make up more than 90 per cent of the Earth’s mass, but working out exactly what the Earth is made of is tricky,” said Dr Lineweaver from the Research School of Earth Sciences and the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at ANU.
The research is published in the international journal Icarus and is available here and here.
Co-researcher Professor Trevor Ireland from the ANU Research School of Earth Sciences said planetary scientists would find many uses for this new composition record.

Opportunities in Japan in the Origins of Life
The Earth-Life Science Institute, ELSI Origins Network (EON) at Tokyo Institute of Technology offers a range of opportunities for international researchers and students. EON funds support research across a wide range of disciplines within the scope of the following three questions: 1. How did life arise on Earth? 2. How common is life in the Universe? 3. What fundamental principles explain the emergence of life?
Check out the EON seed grants (8 per year at USD50k for interdisciplinary, international projects) and visitor opportunities (1-6 months). EON also hosts workshops with a requirement for interdisciplinary, international speakers and early career researchers are encouraged to attend. Students should watch out for the Summer and Winter student workshops! Penny King was recently invited to present at a workshop on “Cosmic Perspective of Earth: A Planet Permeated and Shaped by Life – Implications for Astrobiology”. Please ask Penny about EON if you are interested! |

Art donation explores connections between geology and weaving
The first scheme of its kind in an Australian university, the Vice – Chancellor’s College Artist Fellows Scheme (VCCAFS) supports interdisciplinary research relationships. It offers an exciting opportunity for creative artists to work with researchers in other fields.
Internationally renowned woven textile specialist, Jennifer Robertson, chose to collaborate with Ian Jackson (RSES) and his scientific research. The results: two exquisite woven textiles: Crystal Imperfections as Agents of Deformation and Tetrahedrons in Olivine.
Jennifer Robertson has very generously donated Crystal Imperfections as Agents of Deformation to RSES for the earth sciences community to enjoy. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved around interdisciplinary research. >> read more |
