Australian Science Olympiad Summer School and National Youth Science Forum

The first two weeks of 2018 have been productive and enjoyable at the RSES-SHRIMP laboratory. We were delighted to welcome students and science teachers participating in the Australian Science Olympiad Summer School and National Youth Science Forum. Thanks to Prof. Ian Williams and John Foster who contributed their time to deliver such great lab visits. PhD student Liane Loiselle kept SHRIMP-SI busy in her quest to resolve the small triple oxygen offsets required to robustly differentiate sample populations from Mars and the Earth and Master student Leo Baeza had successfully measured oxygen isotopes in chondrules from ordinary chondrites. Prof. Trevor Ireland measured oxygen isotopic compositions of olivine grains from asteroid Itokawa returned by the Hayabusa spacecraft. And Honorary Associate Professor Mark Fanning and Dr Bin Fu have been keeping both SHRIMP-RG and SHRIMP-II busy. We were also delighted to have Michael Turner and Simon Turner (Macquarie University) measuring the abundance of water (OH) in volcanic glasses and nominally anhydrous minerals with SHRIMP-SI. Thanks to Peter Holden, Peter Lanc, and David Thomson for keeping the instruments running!

National Science Teachers visit

Thank you to all the volunteers who contributed their time and effort to deliver some great lab visits for our group of science teachers. In particular thanks to the GFD, Seismology, Rock Physics, Petrology and SHRIMP groups for providing lab tours.

The volunteers that made this a huge success were:

Malcolm Sambridge

Michael Anenburg
Caroline Eakin
John Foster
Kathryn Hayward
Andrew Kiss
Josue Martinez Moreno
Angus Rummery
Michelle Salmon

Well done all.

NYSF teachers visit to RSES

NYSF teachers recently visited RSES. We had lab tours from Seismology & Rock Mechanics, GFD, SHRIMP, and Petrology.

Franco-Australian Astrobiology and Exoplanet Summer School and Workshop (FAAbExo)

On the weekend of Dec 16/17, French and Australian students ranging from Year 12 through to PhD candidates attended the FAAbExo summer school, and were brought up to speed on our view of life in the Universe by world experts in exoplanetary astronomy, geophysics, geochemistry, and early life on Earth.

This was followed by a three day workshop (Dec 18-20) bringing together the French and Australian astrobiology and exoplanetary astronomy communities to discuss their latest findings. Besides the enthusiastic discussions that followed presentations, the workshop's long breaks facilitated plenty of fruitful conversations.
