Director's Message

Colleagues,

The year is beginning to ramp up with the rapidly approaching internal ARC Discovery grant deadline and the VC’s 2018 State of the University Address to all staff at 11am in Llewellyn Hall on Wednesday. To give ourselves the best shot at success I urge grant writers to take advantage of offers by colleagues to review grants and to assist our wonderfully helpful research services team by getting applications submitted on time.

Best wishes for the week ahead, noting the improving weather is likely to be offset by more challenging parking!

Steve

Recording Thunder

We recorded the thunderstorm passing through Canberra last night on a seismometer that Sima Mousavi was testing on the balcony of J2.  We show an image of the vertical ground motion recorded by the seismometer around 10:17PM.  This shows the main thunder (lightening strike) and the echoes of that thunder rolling and bouncing down Lake Burley Griffin.  This was picked up by the Canberra Times and ANU Media.  read more

Planetary science meetings

RSES and RSAA will be holding joint fortnightly planetary science meetings at 1200 on Tuesdays to discuss the origins and evolution of planetary systems. The aim is largely to share our complementary perspectives, with astronomy providing a literally galactic-scale view of planet formation, and the earth sciences being able to examine the materials that comprise planets down to the sub-micron-scale.

The current plan is to begin each session with presentations of our own work so that we are brought up to speed on our respective fields, followed by discussions of the latest published research (from the listings of arXiv's Earth and Planetary Astronomy and Karmaka).

The next meeting will be held at Mt Stromlo's Woolley Seminar Room on Feb 6, with the following one held at RSES's J5 Green Room on Feb 20. Then Mt Stromlo again on March 6, and RSES on March 20, etc.

Please let me know if you're interested in attending at any point so that we can put you on the mailing list. You don't have to study space rocks exclusively to come, you just need to like thinking about Earth as a planet. Hope to see you there!

Thanks, Geoff Bonning

New Parental Leave Entitlements

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the early implementation of improved Parental Leave entitlements for staff at ANU.

These entitlements, as outlined in clause 38 of The Australian National University Enterprise Agreement 2017-2021, were to become effective once our new Enterprise Agreement has been approved by the Fair Work Commission.

The University has decided to allow staff early access to these enhanced Parental Leave provisions from 27 October 2017.

The University will contact all affected staff who commenced Parental Leave from 27 October 2017 (including partner leave) to assist them with amending their leave arrangements, and ensure that they have the opportunity to take advantage of the enhanced entitlements.

Any staff who would like to seek more information about these new provisions should contact their Human Resources team.

Kind regards,

 Nadine
