Director's Message

Colleagues,

I would like to share with you the fabulous news that Benoit Tuazin has been awarded a prestigious Marie-Sklodowska Curie Fellowship. Please join me in congratulating Benoit on who will continue working in Seismology and Mathematical Geophysics with Malcolm Sambridge. Of course, some of you will also realize that Benoit’s has been the RSES staff team’s star striker, so Benoit’s success raises the prospect of continued staff dominance in the annual Staff v Student football match.

Thank you to all the RSES staff who assisted the Discovery Grant ‘super peer review panel’ last week. The word back from participants has been very positive and we all hope it will contribute to more grant success.

Steve

Ten Years in the Making

Usually geologists and geophysicists think that the effects of slab-rollback drive long term motion, whereas earthquakes are ascribed to the compression caused by plate tectonics. It is a surprise to discover that things are in essence, the other way around. Motion in the aftermath of the Great Sumatran Earthquake involved the crust stretching and slumping westwards to fill the gravitational potential well caused by prior slab roll-back. But within 15 months, with friction on the megathrust increasing, plate-tectonics began once again to drive relative motion. Tectonics, online February 2nd,

New Colombo Plan

Active Tectonics and Society: Indonesia

A course has been developed collaboratively between the Australian National University and Bandung Institute of Technology for ANU students to learn how Indonesian society is affected by active tectonics.

RSES has attracted funding from the New Colombo Plan which will allow up to 15 students to travel to Bandung, Indonesia, for a two- week course during the teaching break in April 2018.

Interested students please email: student.admin.rses@anu.edu.au (Students must be Australian ci$zens who have not received NCP funding previously.)

Carers' Career Development Assistance

The University recognises that many staff have caring responsibilities that may limit their access to opportunities for the development of their careers.

To support access to career development opportunities for staff with caring responsibilities, the University provides funding through the Carers’ Career Development Assistance Fund (CCDAF).

The CCDAF enables staff with caring responsibilities to apply for grants of up to $1,000 to participate in significant international or national conferences, workshops or symposia that contribute to their careers.

These CCDAF grants cover reasonable costs relating to care of dependants where existing care arrangements are not available.

To ensure equitable access to CCDAF funding, the University has implemented a CCDAF Application Rounds process which will be conducted across two rounds each year in 2018 and future years.
