Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Hope you had a great weekend.

Last Friday our School joined the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (CPAS) in dedicating the PEC teaching spaces, Makerspace and workshops in Building 38a to Mike Gore, celebrated member of Department of Physics and founder of Questacon, the Science Circus and CPAS. It was a splendid event with over 100 friends and alumni in attendance.  My thanks go to Kellie Takenaka and her philanthropy team from the College of Science for organising the event.  The Circus and Questacon team provided tribute demonstrations and our Kyle Hardman (DQS) launched a ping pong ball at 250 m/s through a drink can for an impressed audience.  It was all a great tribute to one of our most significant educators.

The EoI for the new Head of Laser Physics Centre opens today and will remain open until Friday 23rd February 2018.  After consultation with the Department the terms of appointment is 3 years. Please refer to guidelines and selection criteria found at https://physics.anu.edu.au/intranet/EventHorizon/?Article=2921.

An early notice that 3-6-9’s will start in the next few months.  Please take the opportunity at your Department meetings to discuss these presentations as they will form important elements in our External School Review later this year.  More about the review at the next School Forum.

The VC’s University Commencement this arvo!  See you there.

Thanks to Greg Lane who has added a nice LEGO set to the collection of toys in the School Privacy Room. All the best for the week.

Tim
