Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Hope you enjoyed a warm and relaxing Canberra Day.

The QS World Rankings are just out!  The excellent news is that we’re now equal with Melbourne University at 28th worldwide for the Natural Sciences category overall.  At a finer level, Earth and Marine Sciences is 9th, Environmental Science 21st, Mathematics is 22nd and Physics and Astronomy is 44th in the world. This is a dramatic jump and reflects the global impact of our research.

It is my pleasure to announce Professor Andrew Truscott as the new head of the Laser Physics Centre for the next 3 years. Please join me and thank A/Professor Matt Sellars for his excellent skills and dedication to the role.  I’m pleased to add that the School Executive will now benefit from his wisdom as he joins as Deputy Director (Infrastructure).

This week’s pic is from the late and dearly remembered, Dr Roger Heady (SEM of a radiolarian).  His work is part of the Imag(in)ing art exhibition running currently in Sydney.  Artists and scientists from USyd and ANU have produced jointly inspired works under the direction of Sydney-based artist, Jane Theau, all with imaging at the heart of their work.

Have a great (short) week,

Tim
