PhD student Durgalakshmi has just arrived at RSES after her first round of fieldwork in the Southern Granulite Terrane of India. She is studying one of the best preserved Late Neoarchaean terranes, a possible late Archaean crustal cross-section in the Nilgiri-Namakkal region of Tamil Nadu. The area is characterised by granulite grade charnockite (opx-bearing granite) with associated metapelite, felsic gneiss, banded iron (meta-BIF), metapyroxenite (± garnet), metagabbro (± garnet), anorthosite and ultramafic rocks (dunite, websterite). The aim of her project is to characterise these rock types, and to establish the relationships between them, their ages, protoliths and thermal histories. This will provide a better understanding of the processes that operated near the Archaean-Proterozoic boundary (~ 2.5 Ga), the time of a sudden raise in atmospheric oxygen known as the Great Oxidation Event.
