Director's Message

Namaste from Chennai.

Congratulations to Matt Thompson (PRL) and Kaitlin Cook (NP) for receiving a Springer Thesis Award (seems I jumped the gun last week). This annual award recognises students internationally for their outstanding contributions. Matt's thesis was titled "Measuring Helium nano-bubble formation in tungsten with grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering" and Kaitlin's thesis was titled "Zeptosecond dynamics of transfer-triggered breakup: Mechanisms, timescales and consequences for fusion".

I hope your PDR discussions are progressing well.  I’m very happy to discuss this essential process with anyone. (Less than a month before the deadline).

The EoI for the Head of Department of Theoretical Physics has now closed and the following staff have submitted their interest in the 5 year role: Murray Batchelor, Vladimir Bazhanov, Anatoli Kheifets and Cédric Simenel.  I thank them all for their interest. The School Executive will convene on Thursday with the result notified in the next Event Horizon.

This week’s pic is from Anna University, Chennai and was part of a College of Science delegation to India last week (and continuing this week).  If you have an interest in engaging with some of the top Indian research institutions please contact me.  We will be going back twice more this year and I would be pleased to sponsor research workshops.  There will be further details through your HoDs shortly.

Have a great week, see you Tuesday.

Tim
