Discovery of oldest biological colours

Our PNAS paper that came out on Monday got way more publicity than expected, the AltMetric score is heading towards 500, and it was reported in hundreds of newspapers. I gave about a dozen radio life interviews on Tuesday, plus more recorded interviews and a 5 minutes life interview for ABC TV with Joe O’Brien. >>>here

Parliamentary Joint Committee

Rachel Wood and Stewart Fallon gave witness testimony Monday July 9th to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Law Enforcement’s inquiry into the trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn regarding determining the date of death for seized ivory and rhino horn for wildlife forensics. Also presenting information was Professor Rebecca Johnson (Director of the Australian Museum Research Institute) and Cameron Slatyer (manager Live and Geo Sciences collections, Australian Museum).

Did you know almost 10% of postgraduate students at ANU were homeless or facing homelessness at the start of 2018?

PARSA (Postgraduate and Research Student Association) knows that ANU postgraduate students are struggling to find safe and secure accommodation in Canberra, which is why we’ve been running the Home Away from Home campaign to encourage the university to take action on this issue.

So far, the university has stalled on enacting any real change for postgraduate students so, in solidarity we’re spending a night sleeping outside Chancelry to show the university the seriousness of the issue. With almost 10% of postgraduate students homeless or at risk of homelessness at the start of this year, urgent action is needed.

If you want to stand in solidarity with ANU postgraduate students sleeping in Chifley, on friends’ couches, in their offices, in expensive temporary accommodation and in homes inadequately prepared for the Canberra winter, join us on Friday, 27th of July on the lawn outside the Chancelry building.

If you’re ready to take the next step, or if you’ve just got questions about participating in the 'Student Sleepout', send Tess an email on parsa.advocacy@anu.edu.au.

If you are a student currently struggling with accommodation, please get in contact with our Student Assistance Team who can help with temporary accommodation and support. Contact the team on parsa.assistance@anu.edu.au.

Collaboratively answering Australia's Geoscience Questions

AuScope is excited to have Associate Professor Meghan Miller leading our Earth Imaging program from 1 July 2018 as Professor Malcolm Sambridge transitions to managing our Seismometers In Schools national outreach program. Congratulations to you both!

Here, Meghan shares her story, from growing up in North America to studying in the US and Australia, with field studies in Morocco, Indonesia and Timor-Leste in between. We discover her passion for plate tectonics and deep Earth, swag of academic achievements, and ambitions for research innovation in Australia.

Training

An important service of the Human Resource Division is the provision of a range of relevant and contemporary training and development opportunities for university staff.

To improve current staff training and development opportunities, we have undertaken the two major actions:

  1. Conducted an informal training needs analysis to identify delivery gaps in staff training needs which has resulted in the introduction of new and additional training workshops that will be offered across the course of the 2018 year.
  2. Refreshed the ANU Staff Training & Development website to streamline and update information on the range of face-to-face training and online training opportunities – the refreshed site is available at: https://services.anu.edu.au/human-resources/training-development

These service improvements are part of our broader goal to strengthen support for individual professional and career development, and the advancement of the university’s strategic priorities and vision.

ANU offers a range of counselling services for enrolled students (undergraduate or postgraduate) who might be experiencing a range of difficulties around mental health, stress, motivation, social anxiety and so on.

 web-site is http://www.anu.edu.au/students/health-wellbeing/counselling

In addition to the group programs and workshops they also offer confidential counselling services for individuals. If you have concerns about the welfare of any of your students, please consider directing them towards this service,

This program is offered during O Week to PhD students who have some tutoring experience. Another PTD program is scheduled for semester 2 and is more practical for those participants new to tutoring. Dates for the ‘new to tutoring’ program released in mid-June.

Winter Intensive Program

Modules T1 & T2 – Monday 16 July

Modules T3 & T4 – Tuesday 17 July

Modules T5 & T7 – Thursday 19 July

Module T8 – Friday 20 July

Module T9 – Monday 23 July ( fully online)
