Director's Message

Today marks the start of the second semester. We welcome back our undergraduate students and hope they have an enjoyable and successful remainder of the year.

As most of you will be aware Steve Cox and Brad Pillans retired at the end of last month and Marilee Farrer will be retiring  this week. A School morning tea will be held next Tuesday to celebrate their contributions to RSES

Visualise Your Thesis Competition

Congratulations to PhD student Katie Harazin for making it to the ANU final of the Visualise Your Thesis Competition! Katie was one of 12 finalists from across the university to showcase her PhD project in an eye-catching 60 second video display! You did RSES proud.

Geoanalysis 2018

Dr Janaína Ávila and Sonja Zink of the Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry Group (RSES) travelled to Sydney to attend the 10th International Conference on the Analysis of Geological and Environmental Materials (Geoanalysis) at Macquarie University. Dr Ávila presented a talk and a poster on new analytical improvements to optimize SHRIMP-SI measurements of water abundances and multiple oxygen and sulfur isotopes. Ms. Zink presented the groups work on high precision U-Pb dating of terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials at the SPIDE2R laboratories at RSES. The trip to Sydney proved to be successful as the work presented at poster and talk sessions attracted much interest from the geoanalysis community.

Did you know almost 10% of postgraduate students at ANU were homeless or facing homelessness at the start of 2018?

PARSA (Postgraduate and Research Student Association) knows that ANU postgraduate students are struggling to find safe and secure accommodation in Canberra, which is why we’ve been running the Home Away from Home campaign to encourage the university to take action on this issue.

So far, the university has stalled on enacting any real change for postgraduate students so, in solidarity we’re spending a night sleeping outside Chancelry to show the university the seriousness of the issue. With almost 10% of postgraduate students homeless or at risk of homelessness at the start of this year, urgent action is needed.

If you want to stand in solidarity with ANU postgraduate students sleeping in Chifley, on friends’ couches, in their offices, in expensive temporary accommodation and in homes inadequately prepared for the Canberra winter, join us on Friday, 27th of July on the lawn outside the Chancelry building.

If you’re ready to take the next step, or if you’ve just got questions about participating in the 'Student Sleepout', send Tess an email on parsa.advocacy@anu.edu.au.

If you are a student currently struggling with accommodation, please get in contact with our Student Assistance Team who can help with temporary accommodation and support. Contact the team on parsa.assistance@anu.edu.au.

AIG student bursary applications now open

2018 AIG student bursary applications now open Closing date for 2018 applications is Friday 3rd August.

The Australian Institute of Geoscientists’ Student Bursary Program was initiated to promote and support geoscience research and education in Australia. The Bursary Program began in 2001 to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and, since then, the AIG has awarded 199 bursaries to geoscience students in Australian universities. In 2018 the AIG is again offering bursaries to Honours, Postgraduate and Third Year geoscience students.

The 2018 Bursary awards, which have values between A$1000 and A$4000, are funded by the AIG, by the generous sponsorship of a number of individuals and organisations, and by donations from AIG members to the AIG Geoscience Education Foundation.

The 2018 Bursary Program guidelines, application form and further information regarding the program are available here.

Training

An important service of the Human Resource Division is the provision of a range of relevant and contemporary training and development opportunities for university staff.

To improve current staff training and development opportunities, we have undertaken the two major actions:

  1. Conducted an informal training needs analysis to identify delivery gaps in staff training needs which has resulted in the introduction of new and additional training workshops that will be offered across the course of the 2018 year.
  2. Refreshed the ANU Staff Training & Development website to streamline and update information on the range of face-to-face training and online training opportunities – the refreshed site is available at: https://services.anu.edu.au/human-resources/training-development

These service improvements are part of our broader goal to strengthen support for individual professional and career development, and the advancement of the university’s strategic priorities and vision.

ANU offers a range of counselling services for enrolled students (undergraduate or postgraduate) who might be experiencing a range of difficulties around mental health, stress, motivation, social anxiety and so on.

 web-site is http://www.anu.edu.au/students/health-wellbeing/counselling

In addition to the group programs and workshops they also offer confidential counselling services for individuals. If you have concerns about the welfare of any of your students, please consider directing them towards this service,
