Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope your weekend was relaxing.
My congratulations to Professor Jagadish on the recent announcement that he is to be awarded the prestigious honour from the city of Shanghai, “The Magnolia Award of Shanghai”. I'll follow up with more details later in the year, closer to the award ceremony.
This year ANU is well represented in the Australian Museum Eureka Prize finals. One of the five is our very own, Dr Mohsen Rahmani, a finalist for the 2018 Macquarie University Eureka Prize for Outstanding Early Career Researcher. We wish him and the other ANU finalists all the best on 29th August. Fingers crossed.
Last Wednesday our HDR Team ran the local RSPE 3MT heat, one of the largest ever. Sixteen presenters from all Departments entertained the audience and judges with a 3 minute rendition of their thesis. Congratulations to David McManus (DQS), the RSPE heat winner for “The music of gravity”, with People’s choice being awarded to Timothy Gray (NP) for “Nuclear physics between models”. Left to right, the photo above shows Daniel Higginbottom (judge), Timothy Gray, David McManus, Uyen Nguyen (judge) and Ilya Shadrivov (Judge). Many thanks go to all presenters, Karen Nulty and the HDR student representatives, Lauren Bezzina and Jia Yang for coordinating the wonderful event, and to the judges for their contributions.
