Director's Message

Colleagues,

A quick reminder for everyone to take up the issue of the proposed removal of the #3 bus service through the ANU campus. This would mean our and other schools, and halls of residence on the southern and western side of campus, will be nearly a km from public transport. It will be a major disadvantage to many ANU students and staff. The on-line public consultation is only open until the end of this week! https://www.yoursay.act.gov.au/rapid-bus-network

Please note that Paul Tregoning will be Acting Director for the next few weeks while I am overseas, and Josephine Magro is helping out with the EA role in the Director's Office between 9am and 2pm each day.

Best wishes,

Steve

To all at RSES,

I would like to thank you for your support, friendships and wonderful end note to my career.  The past 12 years have been an absolute pleasure working with you and meeting all the students. I have expanded my own knowlege of the world through stories of your research and travels and cultural appreciation.  The RSES community is a family I will miss. I wish you all the best.

Kind regards,

Marilee

Learning Field Geology in Mount Isa

Eight of our third-year Earth Science undergraduate students have just returned from an intense two-week field geology course based in Mount Isa in north-western Queensland. Over a period of 16 days students undertook four projects to cement their field-based understanding of structural geology, sedimentology, igneous and metamorphic petrology. The projects are designed for students to hone their observational, problem solving and mapping skills in a range of geological settings.  Students mapped a multiply deformed meta-sedimentary sequence, explored and documented fabric overprinting relationships in a high-temperature metamorphic zone and mapped a 1.5 billion year old magma chamber where felsic and mafic magmas mixed.

ANU runs this course in partnership with the University of Queensland, giving the students an opportunity to meet other Earth Science students and make valuable connections with people who are likely to be peers their later in industry.

A couple of comments about the course from students include:

‘It was the best trip ever! I was scared of at first but once you survive the first week it just gets better and better until the point you never want to come back home!’  -  Carolina

‘I found the Mount Isa Field Geology course equally challenging and rewarding while having the rare benefit to meet new people studying the discipline of Geology from another institution.’ – Jeremy

Emily (UQ) and Carolina (ANU) show large books of biotite that they have found in a pegmatite.

AGU Leptoukh Lecture

Ben Evans of NCI at ANU has been awarded the AGU Leptoukh Lecture for the Earth and Space Sciences Informatics for 2018. https://eos.org/agu-news/2018-agu-section-awardees-and-named-lecturers

This is the highest award in Informatics and computation in AGU and is awarded annually “for significant contributions to informatics, computational, or data sciences through research, education, or other activities.” (https://honors.agu.org/sfg-award-lecture/greg-leptoukh-lecture/)

Ben works with Andy Hogg’s team and with others in RSES.

Training

An important service of the Human Resource Division is the provision of a range of relevant and contemporary training and development opportunities for university staff.

To improve current staff training and development opportunities, we have undertaken the two major actions:

  1. Conducted an informal training needs analysis to identify delivery gaps in staff training needs which has resulted in the introduction of new and additional training workshops that will be offered across the course of the 2018 year.
  2. Refreshed the ANU Staff Training & Development website to streamline and update information on the range of face-to-face training and online training opportunities – the refreshed site is available at: https://services.anu.edu.au/human-resources/training-development

These service improvements are part of our broader goal to strengthen support for individual professional and career development, and the advancement of the university’s strategic priorities and vision.
