Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you had a pleasant weekend.

The ARC announcement last week saw three awards to the School.  My congratulations to Prof Knackstedt for leading a successful Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Multiscale 3D Imaging, Modelling and Manufacturing. Joining him on this $4M, fifteen partner grant are Dr Mohammad Saadatfar, Dr Anna Herring, Dr Andrew Kingston, Prof Adrian Sheppard, Mr Levi Beeching and Dr Rob Sok, all from Applied Maths.  A fantastic win!  Also, announced was the award of two Future Fellowships associated with Physics. Congratulations to Dr Liam McGuiness who will work on a Single Spin Molecular Microscope and Dr Hongjie An for research on nanobubbles.

Congratulations to Mr Kia Wang, a PhD Student working with Prof Kivshar for the award of SPIE Education Outreach Grant to support the SPIE Student Chapter’s “World of Resonances: Nanophotonics Boot Camp.”

Hindmarsh are expected to complete all internal works to enable decanting by 20th August. If you are relocating please prepare as best you can up to this date so that removalists can complete the recanting process over the successive fortnight. Simon Foxcroft will be discussing further details with HoDs and DAs in next the next few days.

Parking?  Don’t mention parking.  The construction of the building over the next 2 years will see the removal of almost 100 parking spaces.  If you are likely to be catching ACT buses then you will be interested in preserving Route #3.  Please have your say and complete the ACT Government survey. The map showing the proposed new bus routes (excluding the #3).  Passenger statistics that show it is the 3rd most popular bus route in Canberra with around 48,000 boardings by month . If you are likely to be driving over this time then parking stations are the only real option.  While the ANU is currently developing a Master Campus Plan, which includes a strategy for traffic and parking, this is unlikely to have an immediate short-term impact on our precinct.

This week’s pic shows delegates from the National Applied Research Laboratories, Taiwan with their ANU hosts last Friday.  Many thanks to Prof Tan for coordinating this high-level visit and to all our colleagues who presented their research.
