Director's Message

We celebrated Cake Friday's 6th Birthday last week, with a fantastic array of delicious and specialist cakes for all to enjoy. It was an absolute pleasure to act on Steve's behalf and be one of the judges. Congratulations to the winners of each category and to all PhD students who regularly participate in Cake Friday. It builds a really nice atmosphere wthin RSES.

Steve Eggins returns for just Monday 20 August and will then be away for the remainder of the week. He will re-take the reigns of RSES on 27 August.

Have a great week!

Paul

Superstars of STEM - Applications now open

The search for our next Superstars of STEM is on!

STA’s world-leading Superstars of STEM program provides a diverse group of passionate and articulate women in all areas of STEM – and at all career stages – with the skills and opportunities to become visible public role models and help change the public stereotype of scientists.

Supported by the federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, the program aims to encourage girls to study and pursue a career in STEM, and is working to address a significant gender gap: fewer than 20% of quotes about science in the media are attributed to women – a figure at odds with the 50/50 rate of graduates from Australian universities.

We need your help - apply to become a Superstar or encourage a friend, family member or colleague to do so. We encourage applications from a diversity of women working in all kinds of STEM roles, at all career stages, across Australia.

Research has shown that many women require at least three separate encouraging nudges before applying for awards and opportunities, so we would be grateful for your support to encourage applications.

Big Issues and Ideas in Geoscience will highlight the fundamental role that Geoscience has as a major field of science throughout the Asia Pacific Region. The Convention (AGCC 2018) will be the largest Geoscience event to be held in Australasia since 2012.

AGCC 2018 is supported by all eight Member Organisations of the Australian Geoscience Council, and is proudly sponsored by Geoscience Australia, as Patron Sponsor, and Santos Ltd as Major Sponsor.

CRECHE FACILITY AT AGCC 2018

We want to make AGCC 2018 as accessible as possible to all Geoscientists, including those with young children and who may need assistance with their care. With the generous sponsorship of NExUS (National Exploration Undercover School), a crèche will be set up at the Adelaide Convention Centre in support of Convention delegates for the duration of AGCC 2018.

The facility would be operated and managed independently by Hessel Group (www.hesselgroup.com.au/) and all arrangements must be made by parents with the contractor directly (rhiannon@hesselgroup.com.au)

If you’d like to use this service, please register with Hessel Group directly no later than Friday 1 October. Places are on a first come-first served basis, but parents who submitted an EOI form will be contacted individually and given priority on confirmation of details.

VOLUNTEERING AT AGCC 2018

Volunteering expressions of interest for AGCC 2018 are now open! We are seeking enthusiastic student volunteers to assist in the running of the Convention in Adelaide. As a volunteer at the Convention, you will be provided with an incentive: for your time offered as a volunteer, you will be compensated with time to spend at the convention to fulfil your geoscience curiosities by whatever means you desire.

Volunteers will have the invaluable opportunity to engage with geoscience professionals, academics, early career geoscientists, students and an array of people from different backgrounds, all sharing at least one thing in common – an interest in Geoscience. Join us and build your professional network at the Convention!

Learn more about the emerging frontiers of Geoscience – register to become a volunteer today. Visit www.agcc.org.au/early-career-scientists-volunteers and see the information on the flyer.
