Director's Message
We have had another outreach activity this week, with the ANU Open Day on Saturday 25 August. The RSES Engagement Committee organised a number of different activities, including academic advice, the “Scope Out Science Party” and the field truck at the Science Precinct Party.
Once again, the RSES student body deserve particular congratulations for their organisation and participation in showcasing RSES, and Geoff Bonning in particular for taking the lead in organising people and activities. We really are lucky to have such engaged and enthusiastic students! I would also like to thank the RSES staff who gave their time to help out on Saturday.
Steve is back in the chair from Monday 27 August.
Have a good week,
Paul

GEMS Day - Girls in Earth and Marine Sciences
The Girls in Earth and Marine Sciences (GEMS) outreach event occurred during Science Week on Wednesday 15th August. It was a one day workshop aimed at year 10 female students in the ACT. It was very successful, with many students coming from Alfred Deakin High School, St Mary MacKillop College, Namadgi High School, Radford College, Telopea Park School and Canberra Girls Grammar School.
Thankfully such effort will help attracting female students in Earth and Marine Sciences, and will help create a more inclusive environment in Geosciences.
Bethany Ellis and Hannah James have to be warmly thanked for the creation and organisation of this event, together with the many people who were involved during the day:
Meghan Miller, Katharine Grant, Jennifer Prichard, Monika Misztela, Yamila Cajal Contreas, Steve Cox, Kathryn Hayward, Kial Stewart, Nicky Wright, Ruth Moorman, Rebecca McGirr, Herb McQueen, Sebastian Allgeyer, Julia Pfeffer, Nita Sebastian, Malcolm Sambridge, Michelle Salmon, Lauren Waszek, Sima Mousavi, Jonah Lafferty, Shubham Agrawal, Kate Mathison, Brenda Armstrong, Toni Asher. |

Public Event - Climate Change Institute
Cleaning up our carbon dioxide waste: Technologies to achieve global climate targets Thursday, 6 September, 2018, 6-7:30pm - Copland Lecture Theatre, 25a Kingsley Street, ANU
The world’s energy infrastructure relies heavily on the combustion of fossil fuels, leaving behind a carbon dioxide (CO ) waste product which has become the dominant driver of climate change. Recognizing this problem, the world has begun to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and made attempts to raise energy efficiency.
In order to stop climate change, the dumping of CO2 to the atmosphere will have to stop completely and soon. In a perfect world, carbon would also be reused and recycled, but if opportunities are not available or prove to be too small in scope, the remaining carbon needs to be captured and safely and permanently disposed of. At this public lecture, Prof Klaus Lackner (Arizona State University), will present the opportunities – and complications – for redressing the global carbon balance via negative emissions technologies that remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and store them for the long- term. The lecture will be followed by audience Q&A and then hot drinks and light refreshments.
This lecture is co-hosted by ANU CCI and the Elizabeth & Frederick White Conference - Frontiers in Gas-Solid Processes from the Atomic Scale to the Parsec.

Big Issues and Ideas in Geoscience will highlight the fundamental role that Geoscience has as a major field of science throughout the Asia Pacific Region. The Convention (AGCC 2018) will be the largest Geoscience event to be held in Australasia since 2012. AGCC 2018 is supported by all eight Member Organisations of the Australian Geoscience Council, and is proudly sponsored by Geoscience Australia, as Patron Sponsor, and Santos Ltd as Major Sponsor.

Superstars of STEM - Applications now open
|
The search for our next Superstars of STEM is on!
STA’s world-leading Superstars of STEM program provides a diverse group of passionate and articulate women in all areas of STEM – and at all career stages – with the skills and opportunities to become visible public role models and help change the public stereotype of scientists.
Supported by the federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, the program aims to encourage girls to study and pursue a career in STEM, and is working to address a significant gender gap: fewer than 20% of quotes about science in the media are attributed to women – a figure at odds with the 50/50 rate of graduates from Australian universities.
