Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Many thanks to all those who contributed to Open Day on Saturday.
It is a pleasure to call for nominations for the 2018 Joint Colleges of Science Excellence in Education Awards. Further information is detailed on the intranet. Nominations of an individual or team need to be made before Wednesday, 12th September 2018, with final applications from individuals or teams due 14th October 2018.
As part of contributing to the discussion on the Reimagining Engineering at ANU Project, your Heads are collecting early thoughts on how and where our research and teaching directions might potentially overlap with CECS. Please speak with them about opportunities you can imagine for new areas or improved opportunities for existing overlap.
A new University policy on working with vulnerable people or minors is being developed. In the interim, the School will reimburse the cost of any staff seeking their WWVP Card with ACT Government. It is a great pleasure to host young people in our School and I would be pleased to support staff who contribute their time to this important outreach function.
Please refer to my email on Friday about changes to parking if you happened to miss it. In the difficult period ahead of us I kindly ask staff and students to be respectful towards those tasked with cleaning, moving, building and negotiating our way towards a new precinct. This is a period of great change and it impacts on everyone. Keeping a sense of humour can be a great attribute. We will get there, and the final result will be fabulous.
This week’s pic shows Bryce Henson (LPC) showing three of the five Australian Physics Olympiad team around his lab on Open Day. From left to right; Stephen Catsamas (Marcellin College, VIC - Bronze medal), Hugo McCahon-Boersma (Sydney Grammar School, NSW – Gold medal), Boris Deletic (John Monash Science School, VIC - Honourable Mention). Alicia Lieng (Meriden School, NSW - Honourable Mention) and Vladimir Mikho (John Monash Science School, VIC – Bronze medal) were also part of a hugely successful event in Lisbon, Portugal last month. Our congratulations go out to all the Australian Science Olympians who recently returned with 15 medals and 2 Honourable Mentions after successfully competing at the International Science Olympiads for biology, chemistry, earth science and physics. The UNESCO-sanctioned International Science Olympiads are the world’s toughest competition for some of the smartest students in the world. I am very proud our School hosts Australian Science Innovations, who runs this and many other science programs across Australia. Olympiad team selection for the 2019 International Science Olympiads is well underway with over 6,000 students sitting the Australian Science Olympiad exams this month.

After her keynote, Associate Professor Sugimoto (Indiana University) will be joined by panellists Professor Therese Jefferson, Executive Director for Social, Behavioural and Economic Sciences at the Australian Research Council, Anna-Maria Arabia, CEO of the Australian Academy of Science, and Emeritus Professor Ian Chubb AC, former Chief Scientist for Australia.
