Director's Message

Colleagues,

Some important things to put on your 'to do' list this week, if you a staff member:

  • 1) To have your say about the university in the VOICE survey.  The University places a great deal of value on the opinions provided by staff in this survey. All staff should have received a personalised invitation and link to fill out the survey.
  • 2) Think about attending the VC’s packed lunch tomorrow in the Robertson Building from 12-1pm

For students, many of you are out enjoying the outback on the central Australia road trip. The rest of us are looking forward to the photos and fabulous stories when you return.

Finally, please join me in welcoming Shanti Devi to the School. Shanti will be part of the School’s admin team working as the Executive Assistant in the Director’s office, commencing this Thursday, 20th September. Shanti comes most recently from the ANU Medical School and brings a wealth of experience from prior roles in government.

Best wishes for the week ahead,

Steve

EARTH (EMSC1008) Field Trip

Staff and students spent last week in the field studying the spectacular geology of the NSW South Coast. The group photo was taken at Dolphin Point where a dolerite dyke intrudes into the Ulladulla mudstone.

Students are nicely perched along the hardened and baked margin of the intrusion. Participants on the 5-day class field trip were Andrew Berry (trip leader), Caroline Eakin, Antony Burham, Kate Holland, Brian Harrold, Laura Miller, Laura Crisp, Monika Misztela, and around 60 first year students.

The 20th Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference (AOGC) - Origins of oil, old organics and organisms

RSES in collaboration with Geoscience Australia, will host this year’s Australian Organic Geochemistry Conference (AOGC), to be held at the Finkel Theatre, John Curtin School of Medical Research, ANU from 3–7 December 2018.

Details about AOGC 2018, including information about how to register and submit abstracts, are now available on the conference website:

Abstract Submission

Abstract submission is now open. An abstract template and instructions can be found on the web page, and the deadline for submission is September 30, 2018.

We welcome abstracts with any topic and application in the field of organic geochemistry and its fringes, including carbon sequestration, palaeobiogeochemistry, geomicrobiology, petroleum basin analysis, and the molecular and isotope geochemistry of source rocks, petroleum and gas.

Please submit abstracts to aogc@anu.edu.au

Call for Donations: Earth Science Box for the Jindabyne Central School

The Jindabyne Central School in The Snowy Mountains, is living a very exciting moment, as the School is rapidly expanding with a science department growing at a fast pace.

This year further marks the first time they have had an Earth Science class. We can congratulate them for such achievements, and for their dedication in forming and empowering the future generation. As a rural school, the Jindabyne Central School faces many challenges, and one of them is very limited resources. As such, they indicated to us their critical need of assistance. We responded positively as we think RSES can assist this school by putting together an "Earth Science Box", containing donation materials that can be used by teachers and students in the context of Earth Science classes.  We thus are making a call for donations, in order to collect materials that will constitute this Earth Science box.

Any donation a High School Earth systems subject could utilise effectively will be extremely appreciated, and will directly benefit kids from the Jindabyne Central School. Particular needs include hardness kits, mineral samples, sieves, grain size cards, old geologic maps, and also anything that can be related to Kosciuszko National Park or The Snowy Mountains. You can stop by my office (J1 - 120), and contact me by email/phone if you have any questions.

We thank you in advance for your generosity.

Best regards,
Charles Le Losq

(on behalf of the members of the Engagement Committee)

Thursday, 13 September was R U OK? Day. This is a fantastic reminder to check our own mental health and the wellbeing of others. Mental health is a positive concept related to the social and emotional wellbeing of individuals and communities.

Do you want to support a colleague, friend or family member? You can help to start meaningful conversations every day. Check in with someone, particularly if you’ve noticed a change in behaviour or mood. You could change a life by:

  1. Asking R U OK?
  2. Listening
  3. Encouraging action; and,
  4. Checking in

It’s so easy to take our mental health for granted; to prioritise other things; to put it off until next week. To create dialogue and reduce the stigma toward mental health, you could complete a ‘Make a Promise’ card. For inspiration on making a promise click here.
