Director's Message

Colleagues,

Thank you again to all of you who donated to ‘Charlie’, which has allowed the School to install and display such an impressive and important piece of indigenous art in our foyer. I received an extraordinary level of positive feedback from many people following last week’s indigenous art unveiling event.

Thanks also to everyone who contributed information to meet the School’s NIG reporting obligation, especially the staff and students who contributed to the truly excellent research that constitutes the core of the report and is our reason for being.

And finally a reminder of the upcoming Inaugural Chappell Lecture. This will be delivered by Carol Frost, Professor at the University of Wyoming, current Division Director for Earth Sciences at the National Science Foundation, and incoming President of the Mineralogical Society of America, on the 22nd of November, http://rses.anu.edu.au/news-events/2018-inaugural-chappell-public-lecture.

With regards,

 Steve

Indigenous art unveiling event

Wednesday afternoon RSES and COS staff gathered in the Jaeger 8 foyer for Charlie the croc's official debut as well as the unveiling of “Ngunnawall Land”, a painting by local indigenous artist Richie Allen.

The artwork by Richie, is one of a series of artworks by indigenous artists acquired by the ANU Joint Colleges of Science to be displayed in their four science hubs. With David Akers and Auntie Matilda House officiating, other indigenous artists and their works were also present: Lyn Talbot, Greg Joseph and Dale Huddleson.

Charlie was then formally introduced by our Director. Our now resident crocodile was the result of a call out from Steve Eggins to find an indigenous piece of art to showcase in our RSES foyer. Found by Marnie Forster in Darwin, Charlie was conceived by two indigenous boys in a Darwin detention centre from scrap metal using a MIG welder and a grinder.  Unadorned, Charlie was later transformed from an impressive 5m long streel sculpture to a remarkable piece of indigenous art by artists Allen Inge and Gary Timber, from the Belyuen community near Darwin.

Thank you to Steve and Marnie and the wider RSES community in bringing us this compelling piece of indigenous artwork. Note: Charlie’s story is yet to be told in full.

To view “Ngunnawall Land” by Richie Allen or Lyn Talbot’s works “Corroboree Storytelling” and “Communities out West” please visit the Jaeger Hub on level 2 of Jaeger 8.
