Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you had a peaceful weekend.  This week’s pic shows the field of handmade poppies planted around the Australian War Memorial for Remembrance Day and the Centenary of Armistice, which people around the world commemorated yesterday.  It is a deeply reflective period and I know many in our School will find it a moving time.

Congratulations to all honours students who so ably presented either their final or mid-term talks late last week.  The ones I was lucky enough to see left me in awe.  Well done everyone!

A heads-up to add a discussion about Long Service Leave and Annual Leave plans when you next see you supervisor.  With the new Enterprise Agreement coming into effect this year, the maximum amount of Long Service Leave and Annual Leave that can be accrued has been further reduced.  Please ensure plans are in place for 2019 for your excess leave. Many PDRs are coming around again and this is a good opportunity to refresh your contribution to your Dept 3-6-9.  Academic staff, please remember the mandatory minimum contribution towards service to education.  There are many ways to contribute to our excellent education programs.

While we await the ARC results please consider what you may wish to submit next year.  Your Heads have a list of all people in your Department eligible to submit a DP, DECRA or Future Fellowship.  Please talk with them, your supervisors and potentially other colleagues in different Departments.  This year we will trial a process for DP submission that will greatly reduce the unnecessary administrative overheads.  Details in the next Event Horizon.

Have a great week,

Tim

Fast Time Reversal Optical Focusing for Deep Brain Optogenetic Activation - Professor Changhuei Yang

We appear opaque because our tissues scatter light very strongly. Traditionally, focusing of light in biological tissues is confounded by the extreme scattering nature of tissues. Interestingly, optical scattering is time-symmetric and we can exploit optical phase conjugation methods to null out scattering effects......

Equity and Diversity

Breaking the barriers - Through a major survey, interviews and focus groups, the Royal Chemical Society has gathered data from across the community, giving new insights into the systemic barriers facing women in academia. Talented women are leaving the sector before reaching their full potential, and many excellent female scientists who stay in academia are not progressing to senior grades in the same proportion as their male peers.(image alamy.com)
