Director's Message

Colleagues,

Please join me in congratulating Penny King on being elected a Fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America. Fellows are elected based on having made a significant contribution to the advancement of mineralogy, crystallography, geochemistry, petrology, or allied sciences and whose scientific contribution utilized mineralogical studies or data.  We are yet to see the specifics of Penny’s citation.

After a couple of eventful weeks we now have almost half the School away at the Fall AGU conference in Washington DC. Half expecting an empty tea room this morning I arrived to find an almost record turnout in the absence of a special celebration.

Finally please note that this week we have graduations on Tuesday and Thursday.  Congratulations to all those who are graduating, I look forward to seeing you and celebrating with you at the ceremonies.

warm regards,

Steve

AMOS Awards announced

Congratulation to Dr Catherine A. Vreugdenhi for winning the Uwe Radok award for her thesis entitled "The effects of convection in geostrophic circulation: insights into ocean heat transport and energy budget".

The 2018 Meyers Medal has been awarded to Dr Adele Morrison. Dr Morrison is a highly productive research scientist who has made significant contributions to the field of Southern Ocean dynamics and its impact on the climate and ecosystem. Congratulations winners.https://www.amos.org.au/amos-awards-2018/

Congratulations to Michael Anenburg for winning the Bicentennial Gold 88 Endowment Award!

Michael Anenburg was awarded a $4000 grant from the Bicentennial Gold 88 Endowment of AusIMM. The Bicentennial Gold 88 Endowment supports the advancement of education and research in earth sciences for the benefit of economic geology in Australia. The aim is to aid those undergoing learning and research projects relevant to the minerals industry. Michael will use the funds to study the occurrence of sulfide minerals in Nolans Bore, a carbonatite-related REE deposit in the Northern Territory.

CoS Excellence in Teaching award!

Congratulations to Caroline Eakin and Andrew Berry who were awarded the ANU Colleges of Science (CoS) Excellence in Teaching (Team) Award at the recent CoS End of Year Celebration.

RSES End-of-Year Celebration 2018!

Thank you everyone for making the end-of-year celebration a huge sucess.
