Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
With the glorious weather continuing I hope you had a chance to enjoy your weekend.
I am thrilled to announce the establishment of the Joint College of Science, between the ANU and Shandong University has been formally approved. We are one of the four Research Schools (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology) to constitute to this joint University College, which will develop a focussed curriculum with Shandong University to recruit their top students directly into our Masters program. To kick-off this major collaboration, the College of Science welcomed a senior delegation from Shandong University, including the President and Vice-President of Shandong University Weihai. (Images: left President Liu Jianya and me, and right the joint physics discipline panel aligning curricula on Friday last week). My thanks go to our Dean, Professor Kiaran Kirk, Deputy Dean Education, A/Professor Anna Cowan and Mr Jay Poria, Manager International Development & Partnerships for their persistent leadership that got this exciting relationship through many challenging hurdles. My gratitude and thanks also go to Professor John Close and the then Dean, Professor Andrew Roberts who conceived of this program and from the very onset inspired and worked with us to establish the partnership. My continuing appreciation go to A/Professor Jong Chow and Professor Joe Hope for their expertise in developing the joint curriculum which will make this relationship so valuable to all parties. In the next few weeks a general call will go out to all interested in contributing to this ANU-Shandong College of Science program.
Have a great week,
Tim |

Grant reviewers award lower scores to proposals from women than to those from men, even when they don’t know the gender of the applicant. That’s because male and female scientists use different phrases on grant applications, according to the study, published by the US National Bureau of Economic Research. » read more
