Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Niho from somewhere between Weihai and Beijing. I have just had the immense pleasure to join the first open days at the Jinan and Weihai campuses for families considering the Joint College of Science program between Shandong University and ANU.  This opportunity will see top Chinese students complete their undergraduate program before coming to Canberra to undertake our BSc and MSc degrees over two years.  Together with our colleagues in Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics we will have three years from September this year to work with Shandong staff and their students before they come to us.  It is an exciting program and offers all RSPE staff opportunities to teach in China and Australia.  As you can see from the photo of Professor Hope above, it won’t all be work. If you are keen to know how you can engage with this exciting program please join us in the Oliphant Seminar room on Friday (28th) at 2pm.   At this meeting we will also be discussing the PEC Planning Day, and anything else education-related you’d like to bring up.  See you there.

I am very grateful to Professor Fu for acting Director over this past week.

Have a great week,

Tim

Gender-equality initiatives are laudable, but their drawbacks and insufficiencies should not be ignored. Charikleia Tzanakou from the Instutute for Employment Research at the University of Warwick (UK) argues that the only way not to suffer from unintended consequences is to be mindful of them.
