Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you enjoyed your weekend.
The PEC Planning Day last week was f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c! My thanks go to all those who contributed to the program, skilfully drawn together by Dr Cormac Corr and Ms Siobhan Ryman. We have a magnificent history of teaching excellence and it is always so pleasing to see how many passionately contribute to our teaching programs. These programs are growing in extent and provide all academics a chance to readily contribute their mandatory 5% minimum to education. Please see our Associate Director (Education), Prof Joe Hope, our program, year or course convenors directly to engage with tutoring, curriculum development and delivery. This week’s pic shows six undergraduate students providing valuable feedback and was one of the day’s highlights.
Heads of Department are currently verifying statistics about PDRs. If you haven’t already please check your PDR status on the list with your Head by the end of tomorrow. Thank you.
This week I’ve opened a new section that will provide alerts of graduate employment opportunities. The Australian Safeguards and Non-proliferation Office, within DFAT, knows our graduates well.
Finally, congratulations to Nuclear Physics on hosting their third international Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium last week. It was an excellent and intensive program, and my thanks to Petra Rickman for her thoughtful organisation of the program and events. I know the delegates were very grateful and thoroughly enjoyed the week.
Cheers,
Tim |

Men don't — in the main — take parental leave beyond the two-week cigar break that the Australian culture views as permissible. We know that men are slightly more likely than they were to work flexibly, but nowhere near as likely as women, and that hardly any of them go so far as to work part-time. This is true even for workplaces with flexible work policies that are officially available to both genders. Annabel Crabb's Quarterly Essay "Men at work: Australia's parenthood trap" examines the reasons for this disparity. » read more

Building Facts
The auditorium has been designed with conferences and public demonstrations in mind. The full width stage is designed for panel discussions, single presenters and science demonstrations alike. There are three ceiling hoists each designed to support 110kg and drops of around 6m floor to ceiling, ducted floor vents and speciality extraction for chemistry experiments, great acoustics and a large digital cinema projector. Back of house there will be storage area and a preparative lab with fume hood. Behind the stage is full length southern view of Spring Bank Island and a combination of blinds take the room from full daylight to black out. Seating 250 people this stylish glass rhombus will present a spectacular sight to passers-by on Parkes Way. I have no doubt it will draw people into Physics.
