Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Hope you had a fabulous long weekend. It is a great pleasure to see Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish recognised for his service as IEEE Photonics Society President (www.photonicssociety.org). This week’s pic shows Jagadish receiving this recognition from Executive Director - IEEE Photonics Society, Douglas Razzano. During his Presidency, the Society seen a 6% increase in membership and started 34 new chapters worldwide. He has also created Diversity and Globalization Committees, assisted the Society in growing it's mentorship programs for students and young professionals, and fostered a humanitarian initiative to bring solar solutions to remote regions of the world.
Volunteers for the Science and Engineering Challenge are being called for to assist STEM-based activities at Parliament House on 23-24 October.
A reminder to conference and workshop organisers that whether financially supported or not all events must follow the diversity guidelines on the Equity and Diversity website. The Equity and Diversity Committee are currently discussing a School policy to provide travel support for carers along the lines currently offered by the ANU policy. If you have thoughts about how this might best serve the School community please let any of the committee members know.
Have a great (short) week,
Tim |

Thank You
Thanks to everyone who supported the Women of Physics lunch last week. We had a great turn out and everyone who came enjoyed the chance to network across the student-academic-professional staff boundaries and learn from each other. |

Outreach - Thank you |
|
25 students and staff from Burnie visited ANU and included Stromlo and Physics North in their schedule. Many thanks to Dige, Habiba, David and Ruvi as we took them on a journey through the Michelson interferometer, relativity, energy and communication. The Bell Photophone was a hit on a sunny day along with the story on the Mad Hatter! (spot the link with Michelson & Morley) | |

Building Facts
The building has been designed to keep electromagnetic interference to a minimum in the laboratories. To this end the electrical substation is as far as practical from the laboratories, and sits underneath the auditorium. The eighteen conduits (orange pipes shown in left-hand image) which lead from three 1500kVA substations are shielded along the full length of the central atrium (over 100m long and following the yellow capped reo columns in the righthand image). Running the cables along the atrium floor also provides good physical separation from the stable labs. Electrical distribution to the labs will be by twisted pairs to reduce 50Hz transmission. To eliminate earth loops, every laboratory will have a dedicated earth mat. |
