Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is with great pleasure to congratulate Dr Virginia Mazzini (Applied Maths) on being awarded the 2018 J G Crawford Prize for her PhD thesis, “Specific ion effects in non-aqueous solutions”. This is the top PhD prize at ANU and tremendous recognition of her work. Each year, two J.G. Crawford Prizes are awarded to PhD students - one in the natural sciences and one in the social sciences/humanities. A third prize is available for a PhD graduate whose research crosses interdisciplinary boundaries. Many may remember that our last recipient was Dr Nian (Jenny) Jiang (EME) in 2016.
The good news continues, and my congratulations to Dr Lindsey Bignell (NP), Dr Robert Ward (DQS), Dr Vanessa Robins (AM) and A/Prof Steve Tims (NP) on their successful application for promotion this year. The Level E promotion process in ongoing and I hope to bring you news in the next few weeks.
I am pleased to congratulate Distinguished Professor Jagadish (EM) on becoming the new Editor-in-Chief of Applied Physics Reviews. Jagadish succeeds Professor Bill R. Appleton and Dr. John M. Poate, both of whom contributed much to the success of this important AIP journal. Very many of us contribute different forms of editorship to learned journals. I would like to refresh our School-wide list of active editors would appreciate if you could flag with your Head which journals you contribute to.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with NARLabs in Tiawan last week went extremely well with a number of concrete areas in which we can collaborate. This is a substantial new relationship and I would be pleased to discuss opportunities around instrument development, space and remote sensing, and nanofabrication.
Today is Remembrance Day, an occasion to commemorate and remember all those who have died as a result of war. Traditionally, people around the World pause at 11am for a minute silence. I encourage you to reflect in your own way on how has war has affected us all. This week’s poignant image comes from the Australian War Memorial after they discovered why poppies left on the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Solider were going missing (https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/blog/pigeons-at-war, photo by Ian Roach).
Have a good week.
