Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a warm weekend. I will be away this week and would like to thank Prof Hoe Tan for stepping in as Acting Director.
This week’s pic announces the new logo for the joint RSAA-RSPhys Centre for Gravitational Astrophysics. Congratulations to CGA PhD student, Nutsinee Kijbunchoo, for her winning design and for having three creative works in a row in the Event Horizon.
Physics Market Day is a little over a month away and while the exact format for this year is yet to be finalised the project booklet will certainly proceed. Project supervisors and Group leaders might start to refresh their offerings for next year. One of the many things that working remotely has taught us is that our website and web-based activities are very well noticed. Maybe contrary to expectations, students globally are much more likely now to tune into a seminar, or to review material from foreign universities. Our wonderful project resource is guaranteed to get loads more hits this year. To help promote physical and mathematical sciences more broadly we will enhance related links to other Research Schools in our College. We will also being promoting to our Masters offerings in step with the ANU increasing marketing around Post-Graduate study options.
The other day when I was requesting a week’s annual leave I happened to notice my excess Long Service Leave (generally something I avoid doing). After discussion with Kellie Takenaka, Development Manager in College of Science, I discovered that I could easily request to donate some of my excess leave to School endowments! Excellent, I thought. Within seconds I arrived at Item 9 in the form and chose, “other” and then later entered “The Dunbar Endowment”. It was amazingly easy and felt doubly virtuous in supporting the Dunbar Honours Scholarships and reducing my excess leave. If you are interested I can recommend going to https://www.anu.edu.au/giving/how-to-give/staff-giving, select “Workplace Giving Form”. We have a number of equity, diversity and excellence awards covering staff and students alike that are listed at Physics philanthropic endowments.
Have a good week,
