Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back whether it is just from the weekend or from School holidays.  My thanks to Prof Hoe Tan for acting in my absence.

My hearty congratulations go to the team lead by A/Prof Jong Chow from the Centre for Gravitational Astrophysics (CGA) on the announcement of an impressive $2.8M CRC-P grant with industry partner, Advanced Navigation, colleagues from RMIT and commercial partner, Corridor Insights.  The ANU team include Mr Chathura Bandutunga, Mr Justin Wong and Dr Malcolm Gray with a total project budget of almost $8.7M over 3 years will deliver high performance optical gyroscopes for the aerospace sector. Really well done! Equally impressive is that together with the CRC-P awarded to Prof Daniel Shaddock and A/Prof Kirk McKenzie, also from CGA, these are the only CRC-P awards granted to the ANU this year.  The image above shows one of the prototype fibre gyroscopes built by the group.

At this stage the ANU is still advising the campus will re-open next Monday (27th) to all staff, but please be advised COVID hygiene restrictions will remain in place until further notice.  It is critical we all play our part in reducing the spread of this disease. Clearly, these restrictions will still limit meeting and tea room use, and the extent of afterhours work. In the case of group meetings can I ask that we pay attention to the disparity of representation when meetings are mixed with some in person and some still remote.  While we can all play a part to ensure equitable discussions I remind Chairs to manage meetings with this in mind.

If you have not yet reviewed the RSPhys COVID-19 protocols you can find them here: https://physics.anu.edu.au/intra/whs/

Finally, as we build up to return to campus life I would like to remind all laboratory workers that regular safety training needs to be up to date by the end of July.  After a long period of absence your lack of familiarity increases the potential for injuries and it is a good time to refresh your working knowledge of the hazards in your laboratory.  Online courses can be found on the Pulse site and I ask supervisors to ensure their staff and students are up to date and well prepared for return to campus.

Have a good week, and fingers crossed, I look forward to seeing you back on campus next week.

Tim
