Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Congratulations to the College of Science team who presented last Friday to the Shandong University Open Day for students and families interesting in the Joint Science College with ANU. Over 13,000 people tuned in to hear representatives from Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics speak about the program, with A/Prof Jong Chow presenting on our behalf. This week’s pic is one we used this time last year and shows the families and prospective students from the 2019 in-person, Open Day, contrasting with the attendance for this year’s online event.
Continuing our interest in the Black Lives Matter movement the 2019 ABC documentary by Director, Maya Newell, comes highly recommended and will be the next in line. “In My Blood It Runs” is an Australian story centred around a 10-year-old Arrernte/Garrwa boy and his family living in Alice Springs. As with last time I propose those interested in discussing the documentary join me on Zoom next Monday 10th from 1200-1230.
My thanks to the supervisors who did the mandatory WHS Risk Management Training pulse module last week. While we doubled the number of completions we still have a long way to go. It is short, only needs to be done once and all supervisors of any staff or students must complete it. Historically, the workers within RSPhys constitute a single WHS work group, a “work group” being the legal term for the representative grouping under which our WHS obligations are managed. In our case by the elected Health Safety Representatives (HSRs), all workers, WHS Committee, WHS Team and School management all work to keep us safe. An outstanding issue is that the number of work groups needs to be ratified and I am obliged to consult with the School to seek views on how many work groups are appropriate. Today I will send an official email inviting views on whether this historical structure is appropriate. If no objections are received within two weeks I will confirm the existing arrangements with the ANU Work Environment Group. If there is a request to review the number of work groups then I will be obliged to restart the work group consultation process, and then re-start the consultation to re-elect our HSRs.
Have a good week,
Tim |
