Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a cosy weekend.
It is my pleasure to draw your attention to the new TMOS website, (ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems). This week’s pic is taken from the website and illustrates the three research pillars of the Centre.
It seems the documentary I recommended watching is no longer available on ABC’s iView and so, disappointed, I will postpone today’s discussion on “In My Blood It Runs”. I'll investigate alternative screenings or documentaries, and am always open to suggestions.
It is very likely we are all close to someone from our School community taking up the offer of a voluntary separation. These are difficult and personal decisions, often made in a short timeframe. It is indeed regrettable that we have limited opportunity at present to properly farewell our colleagues. All year I have been promising to pay our usual respects to people departing long held and significant roles. Until we can get together again, and we will, please just find an opportunity to farewell your colleagues in your own way. I will ensure that we create a future event for the School to thank those departing.
One of our nearest neighbours, the Research School of Population Health (RSPH) has been very active in providing expert advice to Government throughout the pandemic. Dr Jo Lane (RSPH) has recorded a YouTube presentation on managing mental health wellbeing during this period and her clip extends the mental health resources found on the ANU COVID website.
Lastly, I can highly recommend Ben Gill’s Pathfinder event on the 13th, see below, irrespective of how far along you are in your academic career.

- Wash your hands regularly, especially after touching communal surfaces
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing or cough into your elbow
- Maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres from other people
- Follow the instructions of ANU staff regarding COVID-Safe guidelines

Congratulations to Shaun Lung, a PhD student at the Nonlinear Physics Centre and ARC Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS), who won the OSA & ANZOS Best Student Paper Prize for his work on "Arbitrary Transformation of Two-Photon Polarization-Entangled States with Metasurfaces," presented at the CLEO Pacific Rim 2020 Conference. |
