Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure to inform you that our own Dr Phil Dooley, science writer extraordinaire, has been honoured in having one of his articles selected for the 2020 Anthology of Best Australian Science Writing – for the third time running! His article popularised French research on the physics of sticky tape, appearing in Cosmos Magazine early last year. The anthology is now in its tenth year and celebrates the finest voices in Australian science writing. Well done, Phil, we’re so pleased to work with one of the best! To see some of Phil’s awarded articles click here. This week’s pic shows Phil in full flight at Smith’s Alternative.
Don’t forget to wear it purple on Friday, also in its 10th anniversary. Of course these days it’s easy to dress up in purple by selecting a jazzy background on Zoom.
The long running John Carver Seminar Series is just a month away. Students keen to wax lyrical on their favourite project should nominate by the end of the week. Please contact Karen Nulty or Luda Mangos, our HDR Student Administrators.
You will have seen in the School Manager’s email on Friday afternoon the University has instructed all areas to reduce reliance on ANU Purchase Cards. As regrettable as this is, I ask that you please work with the staff who now hold the six cards in Physics. Our colleagues will consequently be under increased work loads and your patience will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you to everyone who have made special efforts to farewell those taking a voluntary separation. This phase is soon to conclude, but the speed of the process has in some cases left little time to coordinate in local areas. At the first practical time we will invite those staff back for a fitting bon voyage. As we all come to terms with the changes ahead I ask that you kindly engage with the Working Parties. The consultation they are leading will help shape the School into 2021.
Regards,
Tim |
