Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

I hope you all had a chance to enjoy a lovely weekend and to celebrate Father’s day.

Speaking of celebrating… it has definitely been a great year for Nutsinee Kijbunchoo (CGA). Wow. Last Friday, Nutsinee won the ANU 3MT competition!!!  And, Prof David McClelland got “Best Supervisor”.  Well done, Team CGA.  If you’re curious, Nutsinee gives tips on making a great presentation at home.  We wish her all the best for the Asia Pacific finals.

Anthony Leung (DQS), also a finalist last Friday, won Visualise Your Thesis competition which is part of the 3MT festival.  Well done, Anthony, you’re on a roll.  Past 3MT finalist presentations are curated here.  In early October the 2020 ANU presentations will be posted.

Finally, the biggest bang for last, Prof Susan Scott was part of world-wide press release last Thursday announcing by far the largest black hole collision detected to date. Watch Susan present this discovery. Credit to the images above, LIGO / Caltech / MIT / R.Hurt(IPAC)) and below, Mark Meyers (OzGrav).

I'm looking forward to seeing many of you this week at your Dept meetings.

Have a great week.

Tim

Impossible' black hole causes biggest collision ever detected by gravitational waves - This detection was really special because we got a few firsts that we hadn't known about before," said ANU's Susan Scott, chief investigator of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav).
