Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
It's always a joy to see clever design enable novel research. The picture above shows 3D printed water cooled helicon antenna for the MAGPIE II plasma-material interaction facility. The antenna has been designed to use the 200kW RF transmitter, previously part of H1, to create steady state high density plasmas for modifying materials. Design and testing have been a team effort involving the talents of Steve Holgate, Michael Blacksell, Ross Tranter, Ka Po Tee and Cormac Corr. The inset image shows the nylon isolator in place, 3D printed in two complex interlinking parts to maximise electrical insulation.
Thank you to everyone who made submissions to the Research Working Party consultation. The panel are working to respond to the submissions and have passed on comments to the other Working Parties were there is overlapping interest. The Education Working Party have just released their consultation paper for comment. I encourage you to take a look, your feedback will help shape how Physics delivers on our education mission in 2021.
