Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Last Thursday I had the great pleasure to be invited to a celebration of a significant milestone in an industry partnership lead out of Department of Applied Mathematics and Centre for Gravitational Astrophysics. The group leaders, Prof Adrian Sheppard and A/Prof Jong Chow can be seen above standing with their many colleagues engaged in one of our largest industry partnerships to date. In my mind this is one of the very best projects to exemplify the cycle of innovation articulated so well by the Research Work Party. Key elements such as working with physics at this scale, cross-Department collaboration and demonstrating how fundamental research underpins translational impact are some of the very best things about our School. Well done to the team, fabulous to see.
I draw your attention to two seminars this week, seen right, a public lecture on the recent Nobel Prize in Physics, and a kick-off seminar on what we will be contributing to a new Centre of Excellence searching for Dark Matter.
On Thursday this week, Professor Kiaran Kirk, Dean of the College will be holding a townhall meeting (see below to register). He will be following on from his first townhall a month ago with specific details on the financial constraints that the Schools within the College of Science will face in 2021. Kiaran will invite discussion, although School-specific discussions will be best addressed in subsequent meetings held in each School. To this purpose, I plan to hold a general School meeting at 12pm Monday 26th to focus on the impact on Physics. Sue will send the zoom invite later in the week.
Regards,
Tim |

Message from the Research Working Party
Thank you for the very thoughtful feedback to our Research Strategy Document. During the past few weeks, we have analysed your comments in detail and worked to amend our draft recommendations accordingly.
Please see the updated recommendations (V2) for your further comments and suggestions. In the coming weeks, we will be organising a School Forum, where we will have a chance to discuss this document further.
Our next step will be to start consolidating our recommendations with the recommendations of the HDR, Education, and Infrastructure WPs to arrive to a coherent School Strategy. Please send any feedback to Elena.Ostrovskaya@anu.edu.au or Mahananda.Dasgupta@anu.edu.au |
