Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
I hope you had a pleasant weekend. My congratulations once again to Professor David McClelland on his award of the 2021 Thomas Ranken Lyle Medal from the Australian Academy of Science last Thursday.
This week’s pics comes from the Professor Greg Lane (NP) taken during a recent visit from colleagues at the University of Melbourne. Together they assembled prototypes used to prove their design prior to committing to the full production of ultra-pure, ultra-low background detectors destined for the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory, which employs 1025m of solid rock to shield the sensitive detector. All of the components were made in the School Mechanical Workshop and assembled in the Nuclear Physics workshop. The left-hand photo shows Giulia Milana (UM) assembling a mock crystal and mock PMTS ready to be placed inside the copper enclosure tube, sitting at the back of the bench. The right-hand photo shows Thomas Tunningley (NP) with Tiziano Baroncelli (right, UM) next to the complete assembly. Ultimately, the copper cylinder at the bottom will enclose an ultra-pure NaI crystal and will be hung down from the thinner tube, sitting within some 12 tonnes of liquid scintillator. The scale of the SABRE detector is impressive and was highlighted in the October School seminar last year.
It was wonderful to see the Oliphant tea room full of people last Friday for Professor Ken Baldwin’s celebration. Ken has worked in our School for close to four decade and I am so pleased he continues his career with us as an Emeritus Professor. Below right, shows a mirror element from the famous Hanbury Brown and Twiss Stellar Intensity Interferometer gifted by Ken and to be added to our Instrument Hall of Fame in the new building.

No Dumping of Waste at the Store Loading Bay
Can all at RSPhys please be aware that there is to be no dumping of any waste/plant/equipment at the loading bay and the area at the roller door entrance at RSPhys Stores. All disposals must be discussed and approved by RSPhys Stores staff.
There is now a safe disposal procedure of plant/equipment/waste implemented at RSPhys for items that may require a risk assessment and safe work procedure to ensure safe disposal through the stores.
For general workplace waste/items, please use the waste bins/hoppers at RSPhys and on campus. For all other waste disposal, please discuss with RSPhys Stores staff. The procedure will be explained on the RSPhys Stores Intranet. |

Grants available: Boosting Female Founders Initiative – Round 2 now open |

The program will provide targeted support on a co-contribution basis to female founders of startup businesses (startups) to scale into domestic and global markets. The program will also provide expert mentoring and advice to meritorious applicants. The Australian Government has announced a total of $52.2 million in grant funding for this program. For Round 2, an estimated $11.6 million in grant funding is available. » read more

Check In CBR App
All RSPhys meeting rooms and teaching spaces now have a QR Code located at their entrance. It is encouraged that everyone at RSPhys use the Check In CBR app when using these rooms, as this will enable the 1 person per 2m2 rule, and follow ACT Health guidelines for improved contact tracing.
It is mandatory for all RSPhys visitors to use the Check In CBR App to 'check in'. An additional check in point is located at RSPhys reception. If you require a QR code for your area, please contact whs.physics@anu.edu.au.
