Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Hope you had a relaxing weekend.

This week I wanted to highlight some elements of our WHS objectives for this year and call for volunteers to trial a new phone app for afterhours work.

The Work Environment Group (WEG) have just released a new version of the ANUOK app, our official campus safety app and the only app that integrates with ANU's safety and security systems. ANUSA, PARSA, and ANU Security has worked together to develop a unique app that provides students, faculty and staff with added safety on the ANU campus. The app will also send you important safety alerts and provide instant access to campus safety resources. As a new function, the app now accommodates afterhours working, allowing people to register with security or with a buddy. I would like to trial this feature within the School and am calling for volunteers for March. If you would like to register for this trial please let our RSPhys WHS Team know (Rick Walsh or Sonia Padrun).

The annual School WHS workplan has just been published on the WHS Sharepoint and I invite your comments ahead of it going live at the end of March. The annual WHS workplan covers two parts; the high-level RSPhys annual objectives for the implementation of the WHS Management System Workbook, and a detailed schedule of monitoring, training and certification of facilities, activities and personnel. Over the next few weeks we will be publishing details of training courses and inductions for all RSPhys personnel. This forms part of record keeping program and will integrate with our cardax system, risk and asset management systems. Tying our hazard management systems together forms the largest part of the 2022 annual workplan and I welcome your comments. Alternatively, you may also feed comments through your elected Health and Safety Representatives (Ilya Shadrivov and Huma Latif).

I draw your attention to notices about the PhD Mentor program and Professional Staff Endowment Fund, below.

Have a good week,
Tim

PhB Mentors Needed

This year we have 15 first-year Physics students in the PhB program, some of the smartest high-school graduates from across the country.

Each student is to be assigned an academic mentor for their time at ANU, and we would like to make a call for people willing to take on this role.

This typically involves 1-2 meetings per semester to provide advice regarding their degree. All students should do research projects and also enter the Honours Program, so this is an excellent opportunity to expand your research groups with extra hands.

Please contact Prof Yuri Kivshar (yuri.kivshar@anu.edu.au) to express your interest. For further details 'read more'.
