Director's Message
Dear Colleagues,
Two weeks ago our Chancellor, the Hon Julie Bishop, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian P Schmidt AC, and Chair of Academic Board, Professor Joan Leach released the ANU Statement on Ukraine. Their statement has attracted a great deal of attention and a comprehensive FAQ addresses the impact of this statement. While they state ANU will no longer support official Russian engagements, they emphasise the need to support brave academics and students who oppose President Putin's unprovoked aggression. Tragically, both in Russia and Belarus, students and academics have met persecution for speaking against the war. Motivated by compassion for Ukrainian students caught in this conflict and for those who are suffering repression in Russia and Belarus, leading Australian academics have written an open letter appealing to the Australian Vice Chancellors to offer scholarships to help these student continue their studies in Australia. If you would like to join the growing number of signatories please go to the form here. In a similar show of global support for academic freedom an open letter to the Russian Academy of Sciences can be found here.
The ANU Centre for European Studies has two special events offered to ANU staff and students with Ukrainian heritage or any personal connections with those in Ukraine;
- The Australian National University invites you to meet with Mr Volodymyr Shalkivskyi ChargeĢ d`Affaires a.i. Embassy of Ukraine in Australia
Date: Monday 28 March Time: 11am – 12pm Location: Mills Room, Chancelry Building 10 East Road, ANU campus To register please email Kerrie Thornton.
- The ANU Centre for European Studies invites you to attend a colloquium on “Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine”.
Date: Monday 28 March and Wednesday 30 March Venue: Moot Courts, ANU College of Law, 5 Fellows Rd, Acton Speakers include representatives from the diplomatic community, academia and civil society. To register and for the program and speakers see: https://ces.cass.anu.edu.au/news/russia-s-invasion-ukraine-colloquium
In these times it is crucial that we offer our care and support for all of our colleagues who are connected through culture, friends or family to this ongoing conflict.
Regards, Tim |
