Director's Message

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back. Much of the notable news over the past week and upcoming events are detailed below. My thanks to Professor Nanda Dasgupta (Director HIAF, NPAA) for providing this week’s top pic (see Australian Space Agency visit to NPAA below).  

Last week we moved the first 16 people into the new building as a test of systems and processes. I have to say it’s great to see the space starting to become alive. This week an additional 30 people will move, and with each week numbers will steadily increase. Once the AV in the auditorium is operational I will open the non-lab parts of the building to all members of the School. At that stage your Cardax will be activated to give regular access and meeting rooms will be available for booking. I’m greatly looking forward to the time when we can hold School seminars there, and transition to the new School tea room. The new coffee machine arrives next week!

The E-Waste’s TAG’s Number is to be noted and given to the Stores' staff and/or a picture of the Tag sent to maintenance.physics@anu.edu.au with the subject ‘Appliance Disposal’.

Where to find the TAG’s number is pictured with the number for the appliance in the picture being: - “COS868”

This request is to ensure the appliance Test and Tag database is kept uncluttered with appliances no longer in our school’s environs and to aid in the Testing and Tagging processes as the Test and Tag crew return to areas already Tested and Tagged.

Staff cooperation with this request is greatly appreciated.

High-profile Visitors to the Heavy Ion Accelerators at the ANU

Staff and student users of the ANU Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility and Australian Facility for Advanced Ion Implantation Research have recently hosted a wealth of visitors from a range of existing and potentially new government and industry partners. These two facilities, together with a third node at the University of Melbourne, form the Heavy Ion Accelerators (HIA) capability of the Federal Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS). 

These visits, highlighting the national role played by HIA, have been coordinated to inform the forthcoming Research Infrastructure Investment Plan and to engage with the Federal government as they develop their response to the AUKUS agreement, with a particular focus on the Nuclear-powered Submarine Taskforce.

Nominations for the ARC College of Experts 2023 - Now Open

Kindly note the ARC will host an Information Webinar for potential ARC College of Experts nominees and further details will be disseminated next week.

Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) - 17 to 20 January 2023

HDR candidates, exceptional coursework students and Early Career Researchers are encouraged to apply to participate in the Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) in Singapore, on 17 to 20 January 2023.  

Applications are to be sent directly to GRO by 10 June 2022.

The GYSS is aimed mainly at scientists but some cross-disciplinary applications have been successful in the past. 

The ANU has been invited to participate in the prestigious Global Young Scientists Summit (GYSS) 2023 to be held as follows:

• Date: 17 – 20 January 2023.
• Time: 0800h-1800h (Singapore time).
• Venue: Singapore (tentatively at Matrix at Biopolis), with an Online segment.

3 Minute Thesis Competition 2022

The College of Science and College of Health and Medicine are hosting a 3MT Final on Thursday 04 August from 1pm-4pm and you are invited to attend. The event will be held in the Finkel Lecture Theatre, JCSMR Bldg 131 and will be followed by afternoon tea in the foyer.

Everyone is invited to attend and support their candidates and colleagues; it’s a great opportunity to learn about the incredible research being undertaken in CoS and CHM. We had a great event in 2021 with 17 participants and an engaged audience and it would be excellent to have another successful event this year. Attendance is free but you must register through Eventbrite.
